A disturbing incident has been reported in Kakola Village, in the Biriwa Limba Chiefdom, in Bombali District, Sierra Leone, on Saturday, 23rd March 2024, where Sorie Sesay, claims to have been harassed and chased by unknown individuals attempting to forcefully initiate him into a secret society known as the "Gbamgbani Society".
According to eyewitnesses, Sesay was confronted by a group of men who identified themselves as members of the Gbamgbani Society. The men allegedly approached Sesay on the street, insisting that he join their organization and participate in their initiation rituals and to replace his father who happens to be a member of the said society.
Sesay, who refused to comply with their demands, was subjected to physical intimidation and harassment by the group. He was chased through the streets of Biriwa Limba Chiefdom, with the men allegedly threatening to harm him if he did not submit to their demands.
Sesay was left with no option but to flee the chiefdom for the capital city, Freetown. According to sources, these men also came to town in search of Sesay. Before long, story had it that Sesay had gone overseas over fear of his life.
"It was like a nightmare," Sesay recounted in an interview. "I was just walking home when these men approached me. They told me I had to join their society and that I would benefit from it. But I knew it was wrong, and I refused. They started chasing me and harassing me, saying I would regret it if I didn't join."
Sesay managed to escape his pursuers after seeking refuge in a nearby village before he flees to Freetown and later to overseas. He reported the incident to the police, who have launched an investigation into the matter.
The Gbamgbani Society is a mysterious organization that is said to have roots in African traditional practices. However, its activities and motivations remain shrouded in secrecy.
Residents have expressed concern over the incident, calling for greater vigilance against such groups.
"We need to be aware of these types of groups and protect ourselves," said Alpha Sesay, a resident of Biriwa Chiefdom. "No one should be forced to join any organization against their will. We need to stand together against these kinds of abuses."
The police have assured the public that they will leave no stone unturned in their investigation and will take necessary measures to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
In the meantime, this medium has learnt that Sesay is recovering from his ordeal and has urged others who may be facing similar situations to come forward and report any incidents of harassment or intimidation or flee the country just like he has done.
"I want to warn others not to fall victim like I did," Sesay said. "If you are approached by anyone claiming to be from the Gbamgbani Society or any other secret society, don't hesitate to report it or flee. Your safety is important."
The incident has sparked widespread concern about the activities of secret societies in Sierra Leone and the need for greater transparency and accountability.
