The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Alhaji Timothy Musa Kabba, disclosed yesterday Thursday 1st August, 2024 at the weekly government press briefing in Freetown that the principal signature event that will happen at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday 12th August will be chaired by His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Wonie Bio, which will involve the reform of the world’s most premier council.
The Minister disclosed that the other signature event at the UNSC, which involves Women, Youth in Peace Building, Sustainable Peace and Security, will be coordinated by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Madam Frances Alghali.
Alhaji Timothy Musa Kabba explained that Sierra Leone assumed the Presidency in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) yesterday Thursday 1st August, a development he described as a pride for Africa.
He explained about how Sierra Leone was elected as a Non-Permanent Member of the UNSC on June 6th 2023, and how the country has been able to advocate for peace and stability globally within the few months in the council.
Minister Kabba said Sierra Leone through its Permanent Representative in the Council will be chairing every session in the Council in August, and key among them, the principal event, will be chaired by President Bio where he is expected to champion the call for democratic and a fair representation for Africa in the Council. He noted that most of the decisions and resolutions discussed in the Council have to do with the African continent, lamenting that it is unfair for the continent not to be represented in the permanent category, a situation he described as an historical injustice that needs to be rectified.
Alhaji Kabba also disclosed that Sierra Leone has successfully participated in key resolutions reached by the UNSC, including the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, Israel/ Palestine crisis, which he said has taken its toll on over 40,000 people and left over three million people displaced, and Sudan.
He noted that all the activities of the UNSC in August will be led by Sierra Leone and that the country is also a permanent member in the Africa Union Peace and Security Council where President Bio and his counterparts have discussed a clear roadmap in Sudan to avoid the predicted human catastrophe.
Alhaji Kabba assured that Africans will be using their voice in the UNSC to create awareness on the continent’s problems, adding that a conflict on the continent is a concern for all Africans.
“We know there are some emerging challenges within our sub-region which has given the need for an urgent discussion on the future of ECOWAS,” the Minister stated.
He underscored the diplomatic gains and bilateral relations of Sierra Leone, adding that the establishment of several embassies in the country can serve as a testament to the high level of trust and confidence the international community has reposed in the leadership of President Bio.
