The recent activities in the two main political parties in the country are a clear demonstration of their proactive approaches to fostering unity within their parties.
The main opposition All People's Congress (APC) Northwest Region organized a retreat in Port Loko City from 17th - 19th January 2025.
The APC Diaspora congratulated the APC Northwest Region on "its successful retreat in Port Loko, which it described as "a successful event. The APC Northwest Region Retreat, themed 'Together We Rise to Unify APC', has proven to be a monumental event that underscores the resilience and unity within the party."
The APC Diaspora 6th Region believes "the retreat has also showcased the unwavering dedication of APC supporters and a renewed focus on moving forward together for the betterment of Sierra Leone.
On the other hand, the National Executive Council (NEC) of the governing Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) at the past weekend took significant steps to strengthen its internal democratic processes. During its last meeting, the NEC approved a six-month extension of the executive bodies' tenures at all levels, including the Sectional, Zonal, Constituency, District, Branch, Regional and National. This decision is aimed at creating adequate time to organize and conduct elections at these levels.
A detailed timetable for the lower-level elections, alongside the rules and regulations to guide these elections, has to be presented by the National Executive. This timeline is expected to be finalised and shared with party members by the second week of January 2025.
The aforesaid actions and many other actions by the SLPP's NEC demonstrate a proactive approach to enhancing internal democracy and fostering unity within the party by focusing on structured plann8ng and accountability, the SLPP aims to build a stronger, more organised party ahead of future national engagements.
Prior to the recent successful retreat organised by the APC Northwest Region in Port Loko City, the main opposition party had earlier embarked on unity and reconciliation tour of Sierra Leone in an attempt to appease party members and supporters who had been aggrieved by some ugly developments within the party.
The leadership of the APC led by its National Chairman, Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray, is playing an instrumental role rebuilding the bridge that had been broken by some bad eggs within the party.
