The Deputy Director General of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust(NASSIT) has described the Sewa Grounds Market as not only a one-stop shop that will provide a conducive marketing environment for the people of Sierra Leone but also as a critical milestone in the formalisation of the Informal Sector, and a huge boost in building the capacity of their businesses and economic viability of the sector.

Mr Mohammed Gondoe, who is also acting as Director General, made this description on Tuesday, 23rd September 2025, during the weekly press briefing organised by the Ministry of Information and Civil Education at the Miata Conference Hall, Youyi Building in Freetown.
Updating the Press on the composition and management of the complex, Mr Gondoe disclosed that the new Sewa Grounds Market is one of NASSIT’s largest investments and has the capacity to host over two thousand market people, adding that the market consists of 85 warehouses, 170 upscale lockup shops (164 single and six double), 277 medium-scale lockup shops, and 1,750 open stalls.

On the ancillary facilities, the the NASSIT Administrator stated that the market is fully equipped with over 170 modern toilet facilities, electricity, water supply, CCTV cameras, fire safety systems, sewage disposal, a police station, Fire Force unit, daycare center, and a car park with the uptake of up to 30 vehicles.

Responding on the Presidential intervention on the price of the open market stalls, Mohammed Gondoe commended the President for his love and care for the people of this country and his intervention to see that their welfare is maximized.

He informed the Press that the President had instructed NASSIT to reduce the cost of the open stalls from the initial NLe12,000 to NLe 6,000, making it more affordable for petty traders.

The NASSIT Acting Director General further disclosed that the cost of the stalls included electricity, security, and water, underscoring the President’s commitment to supporting ordinary citizens.

He concluded on a clarion call to all Sierra Leoneans to maintain the upkeep of the infrastructure for the good of this country.
