The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay Esq., has made a strong and timely appeal to all political party leaders in Sierra Leone, urging them to exercise restraint in their public statements and avoid any language that may incite violence or sow division ahead of the crucial 2028 national elections.
The Attorney General's message comes at a crucial juncture in the country's democratic journey, as Sierra Leone continues to consolidate peace and stability following years of peaceful recovery of the devastating eveleven-year-long civil war that claimed tens of thousands of lives and destroyed much of the country’s infrastructure.
Amongst other things,
Minister Sesay reminded political leaders of the heavy price Sierra Leoneans paid during that brutal conflict, emphasising that the scars of the war are still visible - both physically and emotionally.
The Attorney General lamented that many families are still grappling with the loss of their loved ones, displacement, and lingering trauma that continue to affect communities across the country, while he underscored that political leaders have a moral and national responsibility to safeguard peace and unity by promoting messages of tolerance, coexistence, and mutual respect among their supporters.
The Attorney General emphasised that election should never be treated as a do-or-die affair, but rather, as an opportunity for citizens to freely express their domestic choice in a peaceful and lawful manner.
He reiterated that Sierra Leone's democracy can only thrive when political competition is conducted with civility, maturity, and respect for the rule of law.
"War should never be an option - not during elections, not after," the Attorney General emphasised, adding that no patriotic Sierra Leonean should ever entertain the 8dea of returning to thiae dark days of violence and destruction.
Minister Sesay also called on political parties to take proactive steps in educating their supporters about the importance of peace and national cohesion.
He urged party leaders to commit publicly to peaceful campaigning and to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric, hate speech, and tribal or regional sentiments that have the potential to divide the country.
Minister Sesay emphasised that sustainable peace depends not only on government institutions but also on the collective efforts of all citizens, especially political leaders who hold influence over public opinion.
