The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay Esq., has stated that the matter that brought former President Ernest Bai Koroma to court, which relates to the failed coup attempt of Sunday 26th November, 2023 has nothing to do with Resolution 4.
The Attorney General emphasized that the matter is completely outside the realms of Resolution 4 of the National Peace Agreement, which concerns political prisoners, and the ongoing treason trial of former President Koroma.
The Attorney General recalled that erstwhile President Koroma sought leave to go out for medical reasons and it was granted by the court, adding that he is currently in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He however disclosed that in March this year, the three months leave ended and when the matter came up again, the court extended the leave for another three months. “Now, that is where things stand,” Alpha Sesay Esq. said.
The Attorney General further clarified that while Resolution 4 calls for the release of political prisoners, former President Koroma’s case is not covered by this provision because it does not apply to individuals facing serious criminal charges such as treason.
The Attorney General reiterated that the legal proceedings in former President Koroma’s case will continue as prescribed by law, regardless of his medical leave.
