Following the dismissal of the Director General and Deputy Director General of the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), as well as four other senior officials who were ordered to proceed on leave with immediate effect on Wednesday 21st May 2025, it emerged last night that more heads are to roll in the energy sector.
According to impeccable sources, four senior officials of EDSA had earlier proceeded on leave, including the Head of Procurement and Head of Finance, adding that nine (9) months ago, seventeen (17) names were submitted to His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio for dismissal in order to clean the system as part of the transformation process in the energy sector.
The dismissal of the Director General and Deputy Director General, and the order for some senior officials at EDSA to proceed on leave with immediate effect are not unconnected with the alleged grand corruption that was unearthed in the energy sector by the Energy Sector Lead, Hon. Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, who called for investigations into the alleged corruption ranging from misappropriation, issues surrounding the renegotiation of Karpowership’s contract, to embezzlement of funds meant to boost the country’s energy sector.
Some of the senior officials who have been sent on leave with immediate effect could be dismissed from work and be indicted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) if there is enough evidence of corruption, our sources said.
The investigations, according to our sources, are not only targeting EDSA staff but all institutions that are implementing projects in the energy sector, adding that even former government officials are involved in the ongoing investigations.
The Energy Sector Lead, Hon. Dr. Yumkella, believes that transforming the country’s energy systems would require persistent reforms, prioritizing actions and bold decisions from political leadership.
“The period we face teaches us that we can’t waste time. If you have to do something and recommendations have been given, we must just do it,” the Energy Sector Lead emphasized.
