There is a titanic power struggle going on behind the scene in the main opposition All Peoples Congress that many say would make or break the second oldest political party in the country.

According to information reaching this medium from inside the leadership of APC, the current deputy chairman and leader, Minkailu Mansaray, wants to catapult himself to the position of chairman and leader, should the current holder, ex- president Ernest Bai Koroma make good on the promise he made in 2018 that after he left the presidency, he will give up his party position.

However, there are many APC members and supporters who state that Minkailu Mansaray has not got the personality and charisma required by the party to lead it into its next phase of reformation and consolidation, ahead of the 2023 elections.

As such, it is said that at a secret meeting the party’s 2018 presidential flag bearer, Dr Samura Kamara stated that he would like to become the party’s ex- chairman and leader, thereby enhancing his chances of running again in 2023 as the party’s presidential standard bearer.

Also said to be interested in leading APC is the former Minister of Finance, Dr Kelfala Marah, one of the 2018 presidential flag bearer aspirants.

Meanwhile, the National Reformation Movement which is advocating for a change of the old guards and a review of the party’s 1995 constitution to be reflective of internal democratic elections in the choice of the party’s leaders have vowed not to stop their struggle until the old guards make way for a new generation of leaders.

How these developments, including the outcome of the constitutional review approved by the party’s national advisory council late last year, would pan out in the APC ahead of its next national delegates conference remains to be seen.
