There is a fire burning inside the All Peoples Congress house that the leader of the young progressive minded National Reformation Movement, firebrand Mohamed Sheridan Kamara has said cannot be put out by the party’s old guards NRM accuse of wanting to clinch to power by hook or crook.
This he said they want to do by refusing to remove the selection of the party’s national officers, as against democratic election in order to allow a new generation of leaders to emerge in the party. Because of this, the NRM leader last week resigned from the APC Constitutional Review Committee.
He stated that NRM does not care who becomes the party’s flag bearer, chairman and leader or secretary general. What NRM is fussy about is that democracy prevails within APC by there being a level platform for competition for the party’s elective positions. That way, he said people who can serve APC and the country will have the opportunity to be elected.
“We will not relent…we are in this for God and country,” he said.
“You cannot be afraid of internal democracy and say you want to go for national democracy, Mohamed Sheridan Kamara said, “that is ridiculous.”
“What obtained in the 19th century doers not obtain in the 20th century,” he said, adding that we do not live in a communist or socialist state but in a capitalist state based on democratic principles.
As such, he said the battle line is drawn. He warned those in the APC who are threatening to use violence against NRM to muzzle them to beware of the backlash, reminding them that it is not APC that is in power and that this is a country of law and order.
He said they will be very vigilant to go after anybody that attacks them and make sure that the law deals with them.
Asked on public radio, what the way forward if the APC leadership ostensibly turned down their demand for internal democracy to prevail in the party, NRM spokesperson Mohamed Sheridan Kamara said they are undeterred.
