The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs and its subvented agencies with support from partners including the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank and Eminence Africa have reintroduced the culture of kite flying in a competition they organised on Thursday 1st May, 2025 at Gigibonta Car Park, Lumley Beach Road, ‘Annual Kite Flying Festival’. The event was an effort to revive a fading tradition for forthcoming generations. It also presented an opportunity to reconnect with fond and childhood memories.
It drew attendees from all backgrounds and ages, with the competition itself consisting of three categories: Best Designed Kite, Best Ecotourism Kite and the Kite that flies the farthest. Kelvina Pitt won the award for best designed kite, receiving the sum of NLe10,000 as cash prize. The prize for the kite that flew farthest went to Samuel Kamara, and he too took home the sum of NLe5,000. Consolation prizes were also awarded.
The event reinforces the Ministry’s commitment to customs, tradition and practices that define us as a nation. It is only when that is done that we expect to project a compelling image to the world.
