The 26th Batch of the China Medical Team has made a significant impact in Pepel and surrounding communities, providing critical healthcare services in collaboration with Leone Rock Metal Group (LRMG).
The team, comprising experienced doctors, nurses, and medical specialists from the People’s Republic of China, has delivered free medical consultations, treatments, and health education to both residents and employees of LRMG and its subsidiaries.
The initiative is part of the long-standing China–Sierra Leone medical cooperation, which began in 1973. This latest mission continues to strengthen bilateral ties while promoting health equity in underserved areas under frameworks such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
The Chinese medical professionals established temporary clinics throughout Pepel, offering general and specialized care including pediatrics and infectious disease treatment. Their presence has been pivotal in managing chronic conditions such as malaria, hypertension, diabetes, and chronic pain, which remain widespread in the area.
In addition to direct medical interventions, the team has led health awareness campaigns focused on disease prevention, maternal health, and hygiene education. “The aim of these initiatives is to reduce preventable illnesses and improve long-term community health outcomes,” said Captain Liu, Chief Medical Superintendent of the team.
Community leaders and locals have welcomed the effort. Mohamed T. Kanu, known as “White Boy,” a prominent Pepel businessman, praised the initiative: “Their expertise and compassion have saved lives and brought hope to our community. Leone Rock has shown true leadership in such matters, and we are grateful.”
LRMG has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting healthcare initiatives in its operational communities, recognizing the importance of access to quality health services as part of sustainable development.
As the China Medical Team continues its mission in Sierra Leone, their work stands as a powerful example of international medical diplomacy and the enduring impact of global partnerships in public health.
