The constitutional crisis which almost wrecked the governing SLPP party amidst judicial challenges and alarming confrontation between the then Pa –o- Pa wing and KKY movement which resulted in the formation of the National Grand Coalition is steadily rearing its ugly face in the main opposition APC party.

The National Advisory Committee (NAC) of the main opposition APC party, being the highest body that protects the constitution is now confronted with belated issues raised by a splinter group called the National Reform Movement (NRM) with a mixture of grassroots and young generation members.

The National Reform Movement is vehemently calling for nullification of the clause which endorsed the Chairman of the party, former President Ernest Bai Koroma, as Chairman for Life, until otherwise; he is physically unfit to perform his duties, failing which, they will require constitutional interpretation in a court of law

NRM is now mounting serious pressure on NAC demanding that former President Ernest Bai Koroma be ripped off of his Chairman for Life title and named Chairman, together with other executives who have enjoyed their titles for a long duration, including the position of Secretary General be prepared to hand over to others who are equally vibrant to push the party forward.

Despite the continuing demands sought by the splinter group ahead of 2023 elections, NAC have disagreed with them on the grounds that it will not strengthen the party but rather de-popularize it.

They argued that, if his title as Chairman for Life is removed, he will see it as unappreciative of his untold financial expenditure to party, which will certainly reduce his financial support to the party, which no one among the preachers for change is sufficiently well to stand its financial demands.

Hence, condemn the NRM demands and urged their disgruntled members to show solidarity and great concern to former President Koroma and his party allies now that the Commission of Inquiry has poised big challenges to the political future of the party.

But another school of thoughts who also disagree with NAC’ standpoint, fully supported NRM demands stating the blatant dictatorship and favoritism exercised by the Chairman of party in his related functions to the best of his utmost satisfaction has unarguably built an empire that has divided the party into upper, middle and lower class bondage.

The question many asked: Can NAC as the decisive body disown the demands of NRM and use its mandate to threaten dismissal of its cohorts if it continues or will it regard NRM as a dynamic movement for change?
