The National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA) has urged Sierra Leoneans and foreign residents to register all vital events in order to support the Authority's mandate and enhance population data accuracy.

The NCRA earnestly persuaded the citizens and foreign residents to register all vital events in its published Provisional Annual Report on Vital Events for the year ending Tuesday 31st December 2024, respectively. Among other things, the report provided detailed statistics on births, deaths, marriages, divorces, adoptions, and other key population standards of measurement in compliance with Section 26(1) of the National Civil Registration Act 2016 that mandates the Authority to deliver comprehensive data on vital events.

The report highlights a total of 246,437 live births registered in 2024, which comprise 120,754 males (49%) and 125,683 females (51%), reflecting a sex ratio of 96 males per 100 females, noting that a total of 3,355 stillbirths were recorded, marking a 13% decrease (487 fewer cases) compared to 2023.

The report further states that NCRA documented 10,962 deaths with 6, 128 males (56%) and 4,834 females (44%), adding that of the aforesaid figures, 3,223 deaths (29%) occurred amongst individuals aged 60 years and above, whilst infant mortality remained significant with 2,355 deaths (31%) recorded amongst children aged 0-4 years.

Neonatal deaths (0 - 27 days), according to the report, accounted for 1,054 vases (10%), whilst post-natal deaths (1-11 months) contributed 487 cases (4%).
On marriages, the report states that a total of 1,069 marriages were registered, which represented a 25% increase (219 additional registrations) from 2023, noting that the median age at marriage is 36 years for males and 29 years for females.

NCRA also recorded 76 divorce cases, whilst there were 419 adopted cases, a 16% increase (59 more cases), compared to 2023.

The NRCA Provisional Annual Report on Vital Events, which was presented by the Director General, Mohamed Mubashir Massaquoi, covered data collected from January to December 2024, respectively.
