In an effort to enhance security and public safety, the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) through the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has initiated the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in the capital city Freetown.
The CCTV cameras are installed in strategic locations in the Freetown municipality, including the Central Business District (CBD) of Freetown.
CCTV is a television system in which video signals are transmitted from one or more cameras by cable to a set of monitors, used especially for security purposes.
The CCTV project in Freetown is therefore aimed at addressing rising concerns about crimes and disorders by providing real-time surveillance and monitoring capabilities.
The selected locations for the installation include key public spaces, high-traffic areas, and crime-prone neighbourhoods. The cameras will facilitate round-the-clock monitoring, offering law enforcement agencies valuable assistance in crime detection and prevention.
The data gathered from these surveillance systems would serve as crucial evidence in investigations, ultimately contributing to a safer environment for all residents and visitors of Freetown.
The installation of CCTV cameras is part of a broader commitment to modernize the city’s security infrastructure and foster a sense of safety within the community. Local authorities believe that increased surveillance will not only deter potential criminal activities but also promote a sense of accountability among citizens.
As this initiative progresses, the capital city remains dedicated to continually assessing the impact of the CCTV network on public safety and making necessary adjustments to ensure its effectiveness.
The collaboration between government agencies, law enforcement, and the community will be essential in making Freetown a safer place to live, work and visit.
The initiative underscores the capital city’s proactive approach to tackling crime and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
