The Presidential Spokesman, Alhaji Dr. Alpha Kanu, has denied claims that the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone limits how long a political party can remain in power.

According to the Presidential Spokesman, the law places term limits only on individual presidents, not on political parties, noting that "nowhere in our constitution that restricts a political party to two terms in office." Speaking during a media interview, Alhaji Dr. Alpha Kanu said the constitutional provision applies strictly to the presidency, allowing a president to serve only two terms before stepping down. He said a new leader could still come from the same political party if that party wins the elections, adding that electoral victory is determined by performance rather than entitlement or political rotation.

The Presidential Spokesman emphasised that "even if it is the same party of the incumbent president is going to win again, there is no limit as to how many times a party can serve. It depends on how you work."

Alhaji Alpha Kanu asserted that leadership should be judged by results rather than by identity or political arrangements.

He shrugged aside the idea of a fixed power-sharing arrangement between parties, commonly referred to as a "10-10 year system," describing it as baseless.
"That '10-10 year system' which people often talk about is a figment of their imagination," the Presidential Spokesman reiterated.
