The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a statement expressing deep concern over the escalating hostilities in the Middle East, warning that the intensified military actions could have severe repercussions on global stability and African economies.

Speaking through its Chairman, HE Dr. Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, the regional bloc aligned itself with the recent condemnation from the African Union (AU).
ECOWAS noted that the widening instability in the Middle East poses a direct threat to international peace and security, with particular risks to global energy markets, trade routes, and food supply chains that are critical for Africa and other vulnerable regions.
ECOWAS, in its statement issued in Abuja, Nigeria, on Saturday, 28th February 2026, called on all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and adhere to the principles of the United Nations Chapter and international law. The bloc stressed the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity while prioritising the protection of civilian lives and critical infrastructures.
The organisation also urged for the renewal of diplomatic efforts through established international and regional frameworks, emphasising that dialogue is essential to deescalate tensions and restore stability.
ECOWAS reaffirmed its full endorsement of the African Union's position on the matter and reiterated West Africa's commitment to multilateralism and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
