NOTICE TO CITIZENS OF FREETOWN REGARDING PAYMENT OF PROPERTY TAX

Freetown City Council’s main source of revenue is the property rates payable by owners of properties in Freetown. The Council relies on these rates to fund the provision of essential services. These services include street and market cleaning which helps to ensure that the City’s drainage remains unblocked (of key importance in rainy season), the provision of street bins and the enforcement of the Council’s byelaws which prohibit dumping of garbage and sewage.
The failure to pay these rates severely impacts on the Council’s ability to provide such services, and thus has a direct impact on the cleanliness of the City and the health of Freetonians.
Many citizens of Freetown pay their property rates on time and in full. Freetown City Council thanks those citizens: you are playing your part in Transforming Freetown.
HOWEVER, there remain Freetonians who have not paid their property rates, in some cases for several years. Council has made repeated demands for payment of these arrears, to no response. The Council intends immediately to take the steps available to it under sections 78 to 80 of the Local Government Act 2004 to recover these sums. Any citizen who owes money is invited to contact the Council to arrange payment in full or to agree a payment plan, in order to avoid legal action.
The Council publishes here the names of the 100 debtors who owe the most money to the Council:
