Central Bank Governor, Professor Kallon has called on the media and the nation to cooperate with the decision of the Central Bank to de-denominate the Leone by substituting the current currency with a new one with new values.
Speaking to newsmen on Monday 23rd August, 2021 at the Central Bank conference hall, Gloucester Street, Governor Kallon said they took this decision to mitigate several negative challenges such as huge withdrawal of money from the local banks.
He maintained that the new currency will effect positive impact on the people of Sierra Leone and will strengthen the country’s economy. He called on all Sierra Leoneans to support them in this line of action as they have put strategies in place to ensure they succeed in this direction.
"We have pumped 68 million dollars from our reserves to capacitate local banks and yet still all the money is disappearing from the bank," Governor Kallon revealed.*
He noted that there will be some sociological challenges but that the empirical matters because the change effect will help the country greatly. Professor Kallon expressed optimism that they will succeed if they get support from the nation.
