The United States Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Bryan David Hunt, recently held a crunch meeting with the leadership of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) at their party headquarters on Old Railway Line, Brookfields in Freetown ahead of the mediation dialogue between the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) and the APC which commences on Monday 16th October, 2023 at the Bintumani Hotel Ballroom in Aberdeen.
According to report, the primary focus of the meeting was to emphasize the significance of constructive dialogue in advancing democratic reforms and ensuring stability within Sierra Leone.
A tweet released by the US Embassy underscored the visit’s intent, highlighting its relevance to the wellbeing of the Sierra Leonean people.
A statement issued by the media team of Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara emphasized the visit’s importance as a diplomatic and measured approach to dialogue, which can foster cooperation even among the most ardent critics. In his statement, he warmly welcomed Ambassador Hunt to the APC Headquarters in Freetown.
The diplomatic engagement comes as a pivotal moment in Sierra Leone’s political landscape given that discussions between the GoSL and the APC in relation to the party’s non-acceptance of the Saturday 24th June, 2023 election results and their subsequent decision to abstain from participating in State governance, are set to take place from Monday 16th to Wednesday 18th October, 2023.
These talks will be facilitated by the Commonwealth, African Union (AU) and ECOWAS following separate sessions scheduled for 13th and 14th October.nMeanwhile, concerned Sierra Leoneans have extolled US Ambassador Hunt for his relentless efforts to ensure the Government and the main opposition APC engage in constructive dialogue in advancing democratic reforms, especially when the US Ambassador reportedly believes a successful dialogue between the Government and the main opposition APC will see the elected APC Members of Parliament taking their seats in the august body after the recess.
