The former leader of Sierra Leone's main opposition, the All People's Congress (APC) party. Dr. Samura Kamara has faced a significant blow to his hopes for electoral justice following the controversial 2023 election.
Dr. Kamara had been vocal about alleged irregularities and fraud, calling for a thorough investigation into the results that saw President Julius Maada Bio re-elected.
Despite failing to file petitions against Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone in the court of law, he has been urging the international community to intervene for electoral justice.
Dr. Samura Kamara’s expectations were dashed when his claims of electoral justice were diplomatically dismissed by the international guarantors.
The International Guarantors with a joint delegation comprising ECOWAS, AU, Commonwealth among others on their visit to the APC Leadership at the party’s Headquarters, Old Railway Line, Freetown has unequivocally reminded Dr. Samura Kamara and the party that the 2028 election is drawing closer and therefore they must regroup and strategize.
They further underscored the exigency of time for intense engagement and implementation of the national unity agreement signed between the government and the party a year ago after the controversial 2023 election.
According to the delegation, they were in Sierra Leone to monitor the progress of the National Unity Agreement implementation.
Despite efforts by Kamara and his party to contest the election results through international bodies, including engaging in mediated dialogues, the response has been mixed.
International guarantors, while playing a key role in facilitating dialogue, have not fully supported Kamara’s claim of electoral victory, leading to a sense of disappointment within the APC party.
These developments have left Kamara feeling that his quest for electoral justice may be slipping away, particularly as external stakeholders push for political reconciliation over confrontation.
Many party stalwarts believed that Kamara’s aspirations for a fair review of the election in doubt as the joint delegations reminded them for 2028 elections preparations.
