With the 60 megawatts Bumbuna hydroelectric dam providing maximum supply of electricity during the rainy season, the Government of Sierra Leone represented by the Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority, EDSA, wishes to inform the general public that after over a year of continuous and reliable supply of electricity, KaradenizPowershipDoganBey, currently moored adjacent to the King Tom power station, will be temporarily removed from Sierra Leone territorial waters in contractual wet season starting from 1st August 2019.

During the temporary removal of the power ship, the supply of the 30 mw of electricity under the contract will be taking over by the second power ship named Karadeniz power ship GöktayBey which has been operational in Sierra Leone since March 2019.

It will continue to supply uninterrupted electricity at an affordable price to the people of Sierra Leone. With its 36 mw capacity, this power ship will be able to support the national grid by itself as per the contract.

The general public is reassured of continuous and adequate power supply, as the second power ship moored adjacent to the oil refinery site at kissy, is fully commissioned and operational.

The utility grid infrastructure & electricity supply agreement between Karadeniz power ship Kaya Bey company limited (“karpowership”) and the Government of Sierra Leone represented by the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Finance and EDSA was signed in June 2018 for a 2 year term, and a one year extension option.

With a total installed capacity of 162mw, the synchronized power ships provide a minimum of 50mw during the dry season and 30mw during the wet season to EDSA’s distribution grid for the Freetown metropolitan area.

As a result of the ministry’s planning and optimum utilization of hydro in the wet season, together with the power ship solution; the Government is able to create additional savings during this period.
