John Kamara age 25 and Abraham Kanu age 20 are both persona non grata in their conservative traditional Muslim community of Makassa Village in Lungi, Kaffu Bullom Chiefdom in Port Loko district, Northern Sierra Leone.

John Kamara and Abraham Kanu were in October 2017 caught kissing by some members of their community in a river near their village.

They were taken to the chief and the religious leaders who ordered for them to be banished from the village.

In February 2018, John and Abraham were returning home from a party when a group of youths from Makassa pounced on them and beat them mercilessly and chased away.

The last time anybody in Sierra Leone saw them was in mid-March 2018.

John and Abraham have not been seen or heard from since then.

John who however was living in a neighboring country could no longer endure the hardship he faced and returned home, thinking that he had been forgiven. Unknown people attacked him one night. He was found dead on October 7th 2019 with broken limbs and wounds all over his body.

Whilst attempts were made by the former government to pass a bill into law legalizing the rights of gays and lesbians, the Christians and Muslims came together to launch a heavy campaign against its passage and has since being gathering dust in parliament.
