The matter of Mayor Yvonne Denise Aki Sawyer that came up yesterday Monday 27th February, 2023 has suffered serious setback due to the non-appearance of two remaining witnesses who the lead defense lawyer, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara has subpoenaed.

The Mayor of Freetown City Council (FCC) was investigated and charged to court for obstruction of police duty and disorderly behaviour contrary to law.

According to the particulars of offence, on Saturday 17th September, 2022 at the Airport Police Division in Lungi, Kaffu Bullom Chiefdom, Port Loko District, Mayor Aki Sawyer obstructed Detective Sergeant 7966 Richard Junior Caulker and Corporal 12225 Fanta Fofanah when executing their lawful duties.

The mayor’s defense team was expected to continue with the matter but shortly after the matter was called up for further hearing, the lead defense council, J.F. Kamara Esq. informed the Bench that they wanted to proceed with the matter but the witnesses they have subpoenaed failed to appear in court. The learned lawyer therefore appealed to the Bench to give an adjourned date.

Having heard the application, Magistrate Ngegba adjourned the matter to Wednesday 1st March, 2023.

The state prosecutor, Yusif Isaac Sesay Esq., had led several witnesses before closing the case for the prosecution, while the accused opened her defence by debunking all allegations levied against her in the matter.
