The Satellite can authoritatively reveal that political dialogue between the governing Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) with opposition parties, notably, the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party is imminent in promoting good governance in the country.
APC made their position clear in a press statement dated 30th June, 2023 that they would boycott participation in the governance of the State following alleged controversies surrounding the announcement of the 24th June, 2023 multitier elections.
“The APC declares its non-participation in any level of governance including the legislature and local councils, as the results have already tampered with to give the SLPP an unjust majority at all levels; the APC unequivocally rejects the announced results of the recently concluded multitier elections in Sierra Leone given the glaring irregularities and violations of established electoral procedures among others,” the APC press release stated. Political pundits who spoke to this underscored the importance of political dialogue to ensure sustainable peace, democracy and development.
According to the party, after the presidential election results were announced by the National Returning Officer of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), Mohamed K. Konneh, the onus is now on the President-elect to bridge the political divide created during the electioneering process.
Notwithstanding the position taken by the opposition, they emphasized that the President through the established democratic institutions should initiate peaceful engagements and mediation to foster peace after elections in the country.
