The Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Hinga Demby, has said the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) through his Ministry believes in the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) that creates access to all to improve health service delivery in the country.
Dr. Demby said the Health Ministry is creating a health system that will leave no one behind, notably, pregnant women to deliver safely as well as ensuring that their babies grow healthy.
The Minister further acknowledged the strides of the government and its partners in mitigating maternal mortality rate in Sierra Leone.
Dr. Demby made the disclosure during the last government‘s weekly press briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affair and International Cooperation, Tower Hill in Freetown.
The Minister also noted that Sierra Leone which had been rated as the highest in terms of maternal mortality in the world with 1300 women died per every 100,000 pregnant women has drastically reduced to 443.
According to him, the child mortality rate has reduced drastically, pointing out the need to ensure a zero rate in the fight against maternal and child mortality in the country.
The Minister emphasized that the Ministry would want to account for every child born in Sierra Leone thereby ensuring that children are well vaccinated with quality diagnosis for malaria with over five million mosquito nets have been distributed nationwide.
Dr. Demby also disclosed that an emergency operation centre will be created to focus on child health survival with Sierra Leone on record as the first country to have a comprehensive record and roadmap for child survival.
“As part of the efforts to reform the health sector, the Ministry is working tirelessly to change the attitude of nurses and doctors to meet the expectations of patients,” the Minister assured.

They should be showing sympathy for people who access health facilities. The district hospitals will be reconstructed to meet the present population of the country.”
