The Sierra Leone Teaching Service Commission (TSC) in a press release dated 6th September, 2025 has announced plans to reinstate thousands of suspended teachers into the government payroll following a nationwide teacher registration and verification exercise conducted earlier this year.
“In March 2025, the Commission carried out a comprehensive verification process, later extended twice in May and June, to capture accurate data on teachers actively teaching in classrooms.

Following the exercise, over 4,600 teachers who failed to appear on the verification records or did not present themselves during the extensions were suspended in July pending investigations.
Since then, TSC has been working closely with the Ministry of Finance to review claims from teachers who insisted they had registered or verified but were still affected by the suspension” the Press Release stated.
According to the Press Release “The first phase of this review saw 1,802 teachers reinstated into the August payroll, with their July salary arrears paid in full.
The Commission has now announced the commencement of the second phase, scheduled between 8th and 12th September 2025, during which additional lists of verified teachers will be submitted for reinstatement. In cases where a teacher’s name is missing from the registration list, their head-of-school will be required to confirm in writing that the teacher is actively serving before they can be considered”.
The reinstatement exercise, which will run until the end of September, is part of the government’s commitment to ensuring that genuine teachers receive their rightful salaries while strengthening accountability in the education sector.
Secretary of the Commission, Sorie I. Turay, expressed gratitude for the cooperation of teachers, heads of schools, and the public, assuring that the process is aimed at protecting both teachers’ welfare and the integrity of the education system.
