The damning allegations against Councillor Ibrahim Owen Bangura in connection with the violent altercation that culminated in the death of a young man comprise bogus calumnies against him and fabrications by detractors to undermine his credibility and recognition he has gained among stakeholders.

Despite Councillor Ibrahim Owen Bangura reported the death of the young man to the police for immediate investigation, detractors are accusing him of having hands in the incident without any evidence, as well as linking him to a land dispute at Grassfield, Tokeh in the Western Area Rural District.

Like any normal investigation, Councillor Bangura was initially arrested together with other suspects in connection with the violent altercation that led to the young man’s death, but he was later released by the Lumley Police Division after a thorough interrogation while the other suspects remained in custody.

While Councillor Bangura has been exonerated from any wrongdoing by the police, his detractors continue to accuse him of interfering with witnesses and making unauthorized visits to the disputed site, disregarding a court injunction placed on the land by Justice Amy Wright.

Unlike their fabrications, Councillor Bangura has never threatened or attempted to influence testimonies to obstruct justice and there is no evidence that his release from detention was politically motivated as alleged by detractors.

Authorities have allowed Councillor Bangura to continue staying at the disputed site because of the tangible evidence he has produced, while detractors are arguing that his continued presence at the disputed site could intimidate witnesses and compromise the integrity of the investigation.

The authorities continue to defend the release of Councillor Bangura from detention despite calls by detractors for the police and judiciary to ensure a fair and transparent process.
