The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA) has put stringent security measures in place to ensure that drugs and other substances are not trafficked into the country through the Sierra Leone ports, especially the Queen Elizabeth II Quay which is the gateway into the country.
This development comes following report of substances loaded into containers by unscrupulous, rogue businesspeople.
Quiet recently, a release of the West Africa Global Initiative Report commended the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA) after the Authority in 2021 caught a container loaded with personal possessions and 50 kilograms of drugs and organic matters.
The report encouraged the Authority to continue to be vigilant in ensuring that the Sierra Leone ports are not used for the trafficking of drugs and other substances into the country,
In an exclusive interview with the dynamic Managing Director of SLPHA, Mr. Yankuba Askia Bio, he assured that they would remain vigilant in ensuring that the Sierra Leone ports are not used for drug trafficking.
According to him, they have put modalities in place to track down consignees who use their personal containers to smuggle drugs and other substances into the country, adding that since unscrupulous people fear smuggling drugs and other substances by air, they now attempt to use their personal containers to traffic narcotic drugs into the country.
Mr. Bio disclosed that they are working with line institutions to ensure that narcotic drugs are not trafficked into the country, such as the national anti-drug agency, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), Maritime Administration, among others to make Sierra Leone a drug-free country.
He intimated that the SLPHA will never be a hub for drug trafficking and that modalities have been put in place to discourage such illegal activity at the Freetown Port.
