His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has ordered the demolition of any houses built in the Green Belt drawn by the government to preserve the only source of water in the Western Area.

President Bio gave the order yesterday Tuesday 23rd July, 2024 at the Town Hall Meeting held at the Bintumani International Conference Centre in Freetown.
Responding to the incessant heavy downpour in the past few days in the country that culminated in the death of many people and properties destroyed, President Bio on behalf of his government and people of Sierra Leone sympathized with the victims who have been adversely affected by the heavy downpour.

While he hoped that God would provide for the victims, President Bio averred that they as a government set up the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) because they foresaw the adverse weather conditions that have happened all around the world.

He asserted that though we are in the rainy season and we do expect rains, the activities of human beings in the world and how they have treated the environment is causing heavy downpours, heavy winds and serious draughts

President Bio therefore advised that we should be ready to address such adverse weather conditions when they occur in order to save lives, adding that it means we should stop throwing garbage in drainages which he said is not caused by weather but by ourselves.

President Bio said the government drew a line called Green Belt to preserve the only source of water in the Western Area, but however observed that some big people including government officials build in the Green Belt.

He warned that if we allow that to continue, there would come a time when Freetown could not get pump water.

President Bio also warned that any government officials or prominent personalities who believe they have the power to acquire documents to build in the Green Belt will have their houses demolished, adding that he is stressing on the issue because even some people in government are guilty of that.

The President disclosed that he has deployed both military and police personnel to demolish any building in the Green Belt even if it belongs to him or his brother.
