Reports reaching this medium have revealed that Hindolo Stephen Soya Bongay, former steward to Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the Republic of South Korea, has narrowly escaped death following multiple attacks by unknown assailants in both Bo and Freetown.
According to credible sources, the ordeal began shortly after Hindolo returned from South Korea, where he had been residing, to permanently settle with his family in Sierra Leone. During a visit to his native Kakua Chiefdom in Bo District, Hindolo alleged of openly criticising the Poro society, distancing himself from its practices and reaffirming his devotion to the Catholic faith.
This statement reportedly angered many community members, who interpreted it as an insult to their traditions. Elders within the chiefdom allegedly ordered local youths and supporters from surrounding communities to hunt him down, insisting that he either join the Poro society or face death.
Sources further revealed that during a heated meeting, Hindolo was advised by one of his friends to leave the chiefdom immediately or risk being killed before daybreak. He fled to Bo town for safety, but was attacked that same night by unidentified men. Though he narrowly escaped, his ordeal continued in Freetown, where he was again ambushed by unknown assailants around 3:00 p.m. He managed to escape once more, but since then his whereabouts remain unknown.
In an exclusive interview, Hindolo’s wife recounted the events leading up to the attacks. She disclosed that she had warned her husband against visiting their native village, given his long standing conflict with the Poro society.
Before he left for South Korea, he already had serious issues with his people because of his refusal to join the society, when he insisted on visiting them after his return, I knew they would hunt him, similar incidents have happened in the past about people been killed because they refused to join the poro society” she explained.
She added that shortly after the initial threats, armed men broke into their in freetown residence while her husband was away. “They treating me and my children to tell them the whereabouts of my husband, but I refused the scattered everything in the house search every corner but they could not found him, before leaving they told me and my children that "Hindolo cannot run forever, they vowed to bring him down when ever they set an eyes on him", after they leave I immediately called him and informed him, but since then, I have not set eyes on him.”she said.
The situation has left family members in fear, with many calling on authorities to intervene and guarantee Hindolo’s safety. His case has reignited debate about the tension between traditional societies and modern religious freedoms in Sierra Leone.
