Works to repair extensive leakages on the steel elevated tank located at perimeter of the Banda Water Supply Station near the Lungi International Airport which commenced 23rd November, 2020 has been completed.

The tank is more than 30 years old and due to the leakages arising from oldage and continuous use over the years, it has been losing 50% of water pumped into it. The new management of SALWACO headed by Ing. George Lamin Vandi has taken prompt action to repair the said leaks and restore the tank to normal usage. The tank now witnesses retention of 100% water.

Prior to undertaking the maintenance works, customers were informed through Radio 91.3 FM that water supply will be restricted in some part of the township that have the SALWACO network. Sixteen (16) staff, led by Ing. Abu Kallon (SALWACO’s Station Manager at Lungi) were mobilized to participate in the exercise including the lead technician from Makeni.

Three major steps were involve for this exercise: cleaning surface/floor of the tank from debris from previous maintenance work undertaken such as water cement and bitumen used to minimize water loss. The second step involved application of quick fill to the affected sections.

This chemical has worked in other similar maintenance works on SALWACO activities.

Thirdly, testing the tank for water tight; this is carried out by supplying water to tank capacity and stay for 24 hours and if no drop is noticed in the level of water in the tank then the work is successful. If drop of water level is noticed after 24 hours, then the tank can be inspected again and chemical re apply to improve tightness. The three procedures have been undertaken and the tank is now up and running at 100% capacity and efficiency.
